Specific Organizational Pattern for Rhetorical Analysis

Overview:
Audience: people interested in (but not aware of) how rhetoric is used in speeches

Purpose: To show how rhetoric in a particular speech works, with examples and analysis or explanation

Introduction: Briefly introduce rhetoric, the speaker (biography relevant to the speech), the context of the speech (audience, purpose), thesis. (Thesis formula: In speech x, speaker y uses techniques a, b, and c to persuade the audience to ____________.)

2-4 body paragraphs (analysis: one paragraph per technique or per technique family)

Conclusion: Tell readers how they can use these rhetorical analysis skills whenever they hear a persuasive speech.

Specific Organizational pattern:Thesis: In his “I Have a Dream Speech,” Dr. King uses repetition, allusion, and metaphor to persuade the white moderate audience to support his struggle for equal rights for African-Americans now, not later.

Body Paragraphs: repetition, allusion, and metaphor

Topic sentence 1: Dr. King uses repetition to drive home the urgency of granting equal rights now.
Material for body paragraph 1:
• Topic sentence
• Definition if necessary.
• General discussion, background.
• Example 1 (usually a short quotation or paraphrase).
• Explanation of example (for instance, “The repetition of the ‘I have a dream’ phrase shows the white audience that Dr. King and his followers are fervent and will not allow their dream to be deferred unnecessarily.”
• Optional: add another example, and add explanation if necessary.
• Conclusion: the impact of the technique (point = this rhetorical device was effective)

Topic sentence 2: The allusions in the “I Have a Dream” speech are important rhetorical devices because they give authority to Dr. King’s message that the white audience should not delay in granting equal rights to all Americans.

Topic sentence 3: King uses metaphor to change the complacency of his white audience, so that they will act immediately.
