Taking the Library Murder Mystery a step further, we developed Library : CSI for our joint enrollment students. Thanks to great props and highly motivated kids, we introduced high school students to our college library.

Case No. 101- The Mysterious Case of Georgi Markov

PD Code: 420 Homicide

Personnel: Lab Techs, ME, On-scene Investigator

Crime Scene: A 33-year old man is found dead in the library

Investigation: Dr. Georgi Markov is discovered by library workers slumped over a desk in the library. There are no signs of a struggle. A black umbrella is discovered about 10 feet from the body. Upon immediate investigation, the on-scene unit is unable to identify a cause of death. The body is transferred to the morgue where further investigation yields no results. It is now time to use the library to discover more about Dr. Markov and solve the mysterious cause of his death.


CLUES:

Using GIL to find a book:

  1. Dr. Markov had a great interest in Egyptian art. Go to the 4th floor of the library and use a GIL computer to look for a book on that subject. Once you have a call number for the book, find it on the shelves and take it to the Lab Tech who will give you your next clue.
 
  1. Dr. Markov had a great interest in growing orchids. Go to the 4th floor of the library and use a GIL computer to look for a book on that subject. Once you have a call number for the book, find it on the shelves and take it to the Lab Tech who will give you your next clue.
 
  1. Dr. Markov had a great interest in Spanish Literature. Go to the 4th floor of the library and use a GIL computer to look for the copy of Don Quixote illustrated by Salvador Dali. Once you have a call number for the book, find it on the shelves, and take it to the Lab Tech who will give you your next clue.

Locate a magazine: 

  1. Dr. Markov had a secret passion for Kung Fu movies. Go to the 3rd floor and see if you can locate the copy of Journal of Popular Film & Television with a lead story on this topic. Take it to the Lab Tech who will give you your next clue.
 
  1. Dr. Markov was seriously upset when he read about credit card theft at Health Clubs. Go to the 3rd floor and see if you can find the copy of FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin with an article on this topic. Take it to the Lab Tech who will give you your next clue.
 
  1. Dr. Markov had just discovered a new field of interest: forensic meteorology. He read an article about it in Weatherwise. Go to the 3rd floor of the library and see if you can find the article. Take it to the Lab Tech who will give you your next clue.

Go to Non-print:

  1. Go to Non-print on the 2nd floor and look for a DVD of The Tingler. Show it to the lab tech who will give you your next clue.
 
  1. Go to Non-print on the 2nd floor and look for a DVD of The Lost Boys. Show it to the lab tech who will give you your next clue.
     
  1. Go to Non-print on the 2nd floor and look for a DVD of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Show it to the lab tech who will give you your next clue.

Go to the Reference Area: 

  1. Use a dictionary to look up the word “strychnine.” Go tell the lab assistant how this poison works and you’ll receive your next clue.
     
  1. Use an atlas to find out which two major bodies of water are boundaries of Egypt. Show the lab assistant and you’ll receive your next clue.
     
  1. Use the Science and Technology Desk Reference to figure out if mistletoe is dangerous. Show the lab assistant your answer and you’ll receive your next clue.

Use a Database: 

  1. Go to computer station #1 in the Reference Area. Using GALILEO, show the consulting toxicologist how you would use an online resource to find information about anthrax.

Solve the case with the Final Clue: 

  1. Using what you know about the library, find The Casebook of Forensic Detection (call no. RA1053.E93 1996). Look up “Markov” in the index. Return to the Reference Desk with the book and tell the ME what killed Dr. Markov.

Steps to follow: 

1.     Open your evidence bag to find your first location and a map of the library. 

2.     Go to your first location to pick up your question—use the color-coding to get your team’s clue. If you find another team’s clue, just leave it there. 

3.     Return to your team computer and answer the question. Show your results to one of the Lab Techs and she’ll give you your next location. 

4.     The first team to answer all 7 questions correctly wins!
