During a flood watch you should make sure you listen to a battery operated radio for the latest storm update. Fill some extra containeers with water in case you lose yours. Secure your outdoor belongings,so they do not float away. If you have an upper floor to your home, you should move your valuables out of flood level. You might have to turn off your electricity and close the gas valve. Be prepared to evacuate at any time.
The most important thing to do during a flood is to REMAIN CALM. Listen continually to the news, stay away from the water, the current is very strong and can sweep you off your feet. Do not drive your car through the water.
After flood waters recede you are not out of danger. The flood residue is slippery, Beware and walk slowly and with caution. Wear sturdy shoes that are good for walking. Be careful of animals like snakes and rats that could have been brought in with the flood. Be careful of fire hazards such as: gas leaks, flooded electrical circuits, submerged furnaces or electrical appliances, flammable or explosive materials coming from upstream.
Floods are disasterous but do not have to be deadly. Be careful, use common sense, and remain calm, and you will have a good chance of getting out alive.
