Physical Geology
Web and E-mail
Information Page

This page contains various things you will need to know about this class.

  1. How to get your e-mail address for the class mailings
NOTE: I will not be using GPC e-mail with the Physical Geology class this Fall 2000 semester. I will be using WebCT internal e-mail to contact you. I will also reply to your home e-mail address if you send mail from that address.
I encourage you to activate your GPC e-mail account so that you can receive general mailings from the College on various topics which may be of importance to you.

  2. How to forward e-mail to your outside account
Not necessary since we are not using GPC e-mail for the class, but if you want to forward general GPC College e-mail to your home address, you may do so.

  3. How to locate information online using search engines

Obtaining your e-mail account

You will need to log on to Netscape (or your favorite web browser) on the computer, and go to the following web address to get your student account. Please get an account even if you already have e-mail, because I will be sending e-mail to a class address, and you will want to get college general mailings. In order to get the GPC mailings, you will need to be part of the GPC computer system.

Go to this web address:

http://www.gpc.edu/studentid

You will be asked two questions:

1) your ssn (social securiity number or student number)

2) your birthdate. The birth date (as stated on the web page) must be entered in the format CCYYMMDD. Where CC = century, YY = year, MM = month, DD = day. Here are two examples:

June 6, 1980 would be 19800606

December 5, 1970 would be 19701205

Forwarding your e-mail

Once you obtain your GPC e-mail account, you can forward it to any e-mail address, such as that of your internet provider at home. Here is what you do.

Log on to your GPC account (easiest to do at school)
at the %, type pico .forward like this:
%pico .forward
(that is pico space dot forward)

Hit the enter key.
On the first line of the file, type the e-mail address to which you would like your mail forwarded.
Example: jsmith@aol.com
Type Ctrl-X (hold down the Control Key and hit X) to exit
When it asks you to save, type Y for yes.

That should be all you have to do.

Locating information online

If you are using Netscape Communicator, there is a SEARCH icon in the bar across the top of the page. Click on it to access some of the Web search engines.

Search engines available include:
