Jan 8-14, 2007 Introduction to the Metric System and Topographic Maps

READINGS:

  1. Read online web notes in WebCT for metric system and topographic maps
  2. Read lab manual p. 167-192.
    See lab manual, p. x and xi (in the front) for metric conversions.
    See lecture text, p. 685 for metric conversions
  3. Optional:  A helpful CD to use, if you are having any trouble understanding topographic maps: Go to the library reserve desk and get the CD-ROM "Introduction to Topographic Maps" You do not need to install anything on the computer. Put the CD-ROM into the CD drive. Go down to the Start Menu, click on Run, and find the program topomaps.exe in the folder topoprog.
    Read or work through these sections on the CD-ROM, paying particular attention to the sections marked with a star*, in the list below. Work though the CD-ROM tutorial if you are not sure how to do some of the exercises:

LAB ASSIGNMENT:
  1. Metric conversion exercises in WebCT. Print out, write by hand, and mail (U.S. Mail or Campus Mail), or type and email. Keep a copy of anything you put into the mail.
  2. Scale conversion problems in WebCT. Print out, write by hand and mail, or type and email.
  3. Topographic map assignment
    Write in lab manual. Tear out pages.
    Mail pages from lab manual, or scan and email.
    Keep a copy of anything you mail.
    Keep copies of all of your work.
    Beginning on p. 185, answer the following questions in the lab manual: 1, 2, 4, 5 (a, b, c), 10,  13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 (a - e), and 19 (on p. 187 and p. 190).
    Follow instructions carefully.

LAB ASSIGNMENT: Stone Mountain Quadrangle Map Exercise
Print out exercises from the web; purchase Stone Mountain 1:24,000 scale topographic map in bookstore or elsewhere. See list of map sources in syllabus. Ruler and protractor required for this exercise. Or do trigonometric calculation.

READINGS:
  1. Read your WebCT notes on Minerals.
  2. Read p. 47-70 in the lab manual before doing lab. Be sure to read captions of photos.
  3. Read Chapter 3 in your textbook before doing lab.
  4. Optional but recommended: Go to the library reserve desk and get the CD-ROM "The Wonders of Rocks and Minerals".
    Read through the section on Minerals on the CD-ROM, including the following:
    1. How are minerals and rocks different?
    2. Important Mineral Properties
    3. How to identify minerals
    4. A mineral identification key
    5. Important mineral groups
    6. Reviewing minerals
    7. Basic facts about common minerals
    Be sure to work through "How to identify minerals" before beginning the lab.

Take Pre-lab Quiz on Minerals before doing lab to be sure that you are familiar with the terms and techniques.

Terms to know before doing Mineral Lab

You will need to have your Wards Rock and Mineral Test Kit (glass plate, metal probe, streak plate, copper, etc.) to do the lab.
You will need to use Dr. Gore's Physical Geology Mineral Lab (1121L or 1421L) on Reserve in the Library. Plan to work in pairs or small groups, rather than alone.

Complete the Mineral Fill-in Sheet. Use DR. GORE'S HANDY DANDY GUIDE TO MINERAL IDENTIFICATION. Print out and submit.

4 Jan 29-Feb 4, 2007 Igneous Rocks

READINGS:
  1. Read lecture web and WebCT notes on igneous rocks
  2. Read p. 91-108 in the lab manual before doing lab. Be sure to read captions and look at figures. No need to answer questions in lab manual.
  3. Read Chapter 4 in your textbook before lab (Igneous Rocks).
  4. Optional but recommended: Go to the library reserve desk and get the CD-ROM "The Wonders of Rocks and Minerals".

    Read through the sections on the Rock Cycle and on Igneous Rocks on the CD-ROM, including the following:
    1. How igneous rocks form
    2. Textures of igneous rocks
    3. Minerals in igneous rocks
    4. Naming igneous rocks

5 Feb 5-11, 2007 Volcanic Ash Exercise - Study of volcanic ash samples, and mapping on satellite images

READINGS:  Read Chapter 5 in your textbook before doing lab (Volcanoes and Other Igneous Activity).

LAB ASSIGNMENT:  Print out lab assignment pages in WebCT. Write and draw answers by hand.
Volcanic ash lab samples are in envelope on reserve in the library.

READINGS:

  2. Read p. 111-120 in the lab manual before doing lab. Be sure to read captions of photos. Note the authors of this chapter in the lab manual.
  3. Read chapter 7 in your textbook before doing lab (Sedimentary Rocks)
  4. Optional but recommended: Go to the library reserve desk and get the CD-ROM "The Wonders of Rocks and Minerals". Read through the sections on Sedimentary Rocks. You do not need to read "Interpreting Past Environments" to do the lab, but you are welcome to read it if you wish.

Take Pre-lab Quiz on Sedimentary Rocks before doing lab to be sure that you are familiar with the terms.

Structural Geology

READINGS:

  1. Read your web notes on Crustal Deformation in WebCT.
  2. Read Lab 10, p. 195-209 in your lab manual (Geologic Structures, Maps, and Block Diagrams).
  3. Read Chapter 10 in your textbook (Crustal Deformation).
LAB ASSIGNMENT:

Do the following questions in lab manual beginning on p. 203: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19.
Do and turn in p. 204-205.
Do and turn in all 6 cardboard models from the back of your book.  Tear out of the book and draw or write on your cardboard models. USE PENCIL.
Fold them up and clip with paperclips. Do not cut the corners!!!  Do not tape or staple. You need to flatten them back out to draw on them, and to mail them to your instructor.
For each model you need to draw on it and answer several questions.
You can answer the questions for the model on the back of that particular model.
You will need to turn in the block diagrams on p. 204-5 AND all six of the cardboard models involved in this lab, preferably by mail (or campus mail) or hand-deliver to my office.

LAB ASSIGNMENT:
Answer questions 1-20.
Materials needed: Drawing compass to draw circles, small plastic or paper cup with sand or other particulate material, several coins.
