Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
This site offers a wide variety of useful flood-related information. There is
information on flood mitigation for those who live in flood-prone areas, with things to do
before, during, and after a flood.
It contains background information on the destructive power of floods and flashfloods, including an animation of a car floating in only two feet of water, information on changing views of floodplain management, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the National Flood Insurance Reform Act.
The site includes a map of special flood hazard areas in the U.S., and information on how to obtain FEMA flood insurance rate maps, including the latest digital Q3 flood maps.
Photo archives include pictures of the Midwest floods of 1993 and Louisiana floods of 1995, among other disasters.
The National Dam Safety page contains information on some of the notable dam failure disasters in the 1970's that led to increased dam inspection. There is also a search function, as well as information on earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, winter storms, and fires, and the Oklahoma City bombing. You can even see quicktime movies of Christmas trees burning.
