Topographic Maps Assignment

Dr. Pamela Gore
Georgia Perimeter College

Getting started:

  1. Please obtain your own 7.5 minute topographic map of your area in Georgia, a prominent feature in your area, or the Stone Mountain 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle map
Your course leader may wish to specify which topographic quadrangle map you should obtain.
The index of 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps in GA is online at this address: http://csat.gatech.edu/csat/statewide/maps/quads.gif.

You may obtain these 1:24,000 scale maps from the Georgia Geologic Survey. 404-657-6127.
Also try your local map dealers (check the yellow pages).
For more information or ordering assistance, call 1-888-ASK-USGS (1-888-275-8747), contact any USGS Earth Science Information Center (ESIC), or write:
    USGS Information Services
    Box 25286
    Denver, CO 80225

Map purchasing information is also available over the web:

  2. Read your web course notes.

  3. Read Appendix C in your textbook (p. 630-633).

  4. Read p. 37-56 in the lab manual. (You will not need to do the exercises that require a stereoscope or aerial photographs.)

You may write in the lab manual, tear out the pages and turn them in, or you may xerox the pages and turn them in. If you work with a group, each person should turn in their own work. Do not turn in a xerox of someone else's work.

It is best to work in pencil because you will do a lot of erasing.

Instructions:

  1. Beginning on p. 38 in the lab manual, using the 7.5 minute topographic quadrange map which you obtained, answer the questions. The questions begin on p. 38 and continue through question 22 on p. 42.

  2. You may skip the section on Public Land Survey beginning on p. 43-45 because it is not used in Georgia.

  3. Begin reading again at "Contour Lines" at the end of p. 45.

  4. On page 48, read carefully the caption of Figure 3.12 and compare it with the Contour Map (A). Read question 30, particularly the last sentence dealing with the hachure marks. Find them on the Contour Map (A). You do not have to worry about the stereoscopic contour map (B). Look for the depression labelled "C" on Map A on p. 48.

  5. Answer the questions 31 - 37 on p. 48 - 49. These questions deal with Figure 3.13 on p. 49.

  6. Questions 38 - 43 relate to the topographic map you obtained, as mentioned above. Please answer them.

  7. Answer questions 44 - 48 on p. 50.

Turn the answers to these questions in to your course leader. Please check with your course leader to see the best way to do this. Options include fax, US postage, e-mail attachment, dropping them off in person, etc. Please keep a copy for yourself. This is good "insurance" in case things get lot in the mail, or in case you need to study your answers before your graded paper is returned.
