Required Books and Materials for
Earth & Space Science Course

Updated for Summer 2004

Dr. Pamela Gore
Georgia Perimeter College

RESAs or school systems can order books from the publisher with sufficient lead time, or students may order directly from an online bookseller such as Barnes and Noble (barnesandnoble.com) or Amazon.com (www.amazon.com). Amazon also offers some used textbooks. This is not an endorsement or recommendation of either site but is merely offered as a convenience to provide general information.

GPC students may order books online from the Georgia Perimeter College Online Bookstore. Approximate price of Textbook at GPC Bookstore - used $67.00, new $89.25. Approximate price of Lab Manual/Workbook at GPC Bookstore - new $56.25.

ATTENTION MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS: Please check with your high school chairperson for a copy of the book. I have been told that the company sent it as a preview book to all of our high schools, but I am not sure if it is the same book or edition. Please compare the covers to the ones shown on this web page. Ours is a college level textbook, and the high schools may have received a high school version.

Please print out these instructions before visiting the bookstore so that you can find the books you want.

  1. Go to the Georgia Perimeter College Online Bookstore
  2. When you get there, select Georgia Perimeter College, Clarkston Campus including, Rockdale Center and Telecourses/Online
  3. Click the CONTINUE button. Then choose GEOL (where it says choose your Division) .
  4. Choose course 2650.
  5. Choose whether you want new or used books. To be safe, please get a new lab manual (Applications and Investigations in Earth Science.). The lecture book may be used, however.
  6. Add the two books to your cart and proceed to verify your order and checkout.
  7. Follow the rest of the directions to complete your order.

You will need to purchase the following materials. Staff development funds may be available for your use from your school or there may be funds from your PTO or PTA, etc. You may wish to check with your school principal to see if these materials could be purchased for use in your classroom. If you are going to use them in your classroom, you may want to order several sets.

NOTE: Teachers who are currently teaching Earth Science and already have rock and mineral sets such as the "Classroom Collection" from Scott Resources, or the Washington School Collection may use their existing mineral and rock sets. Please furnish a list of specimens to your course leader for approval. Additional minerals or rocks may need to be purchased to supplement the existing collection if there are critical gaps.

Information for Ordering Topographic Maps:

Please obtain a 7.5 minute topographic map of your area in Georgia, or the Stone Mountain 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle map

The index of 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps in GA is online at this address: http://csat.gatech.edu/drg/24k/index.html .

You may obtain these 1:24,000 scale maps from the Georgia Geologic Survey. 404-657-6127.
Also try your local map dealers (check the yellow pages) - Bradford Map Company in DeKalb Co., GA.

For more information or ordering assistance, call 1-888-ASK-USGS (1-888-275-8747), contact any USGS Earth Science Information Center (ESIC), or write:
USGS Information Services
Box 25286
Denver, CO 80225

Map purchasing information is also available over the web:

If you are unable to obtain the paper version of the map, you may be able to use an online version of the map, which you could obtain at http://www.topozone.com, but I cannot guarantee how it will print out, or if it is the same as the paper version. (You will probably have to use it online only.) It is to be used as a substitute only if the real paper map is not available to you. You will want to use their 1:25,000 scale, as the closest version. The Stone Mountain 7.5 minute quadrangle covers much more than will be shown on one screen of this area, so you will have to click on the arrows at the edge of the screen to see the larger area.

The following two items are available free from the Georgia Geologic Survey.
Earth & Space Science teachers will want to have these for future reference. There are a number of low cost geologic publications about various parts of GA. Call 404-657-6127 for ordering information.

  1. Georgia Geological Survey Circular 1, Publications of the Georgia Geologic Survey. Free.
  2. Index to topographic maps of Georgia. (7.5' and 1o x 2o). Free.
