Rosh Hashanah

By Yom Kippur the 39 days of repentance that begin with Elul 1st have passed. On Rosh Hashanah G-d has judged most of mankind and has recorded his judgement in the Book of Life. But he has given a 10 day reprieve.
Quoted from High Holy Days
The Book of Life

"Three books are opened on Rosh Hashanah - one for the righteous, one for the completely wicked, and one for average persons.

The completely righteous are immediately inscribed in the book of life. The completely wicked ... in the book of death. The decision about the average person is held off until Yom Kippur.

If they deserve well, they are inscribed in the book of life; if they do not deserve well, they are inscribed in the book of death. (Talmud, Rosh Hashanah 16b)."

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is celebrated the first and second days of Tishri. It is a time of family gatherings, special meals and sweet tasting foods.
