The Concrete Random Learning Style
Concrete random learners work best when they
- can try new approaches and solve problems.
"Our science lab is great-we get to design our own experiment."
- are self-directed.
"I'd rather choose my own topic than pick one from someone else's fifty suggestions."
- are competitive.
"I tend to compete with myself as muchas with others."
- create their own answers.
"I can tell by the look on the teacher's face that my answer was not the one he expected."
- ask, "How many different ways can I ...?"
"I love to brainstorm."
- use trial-and-error approaches.
"I need to do things for myself, even if they fail."
- do brainstorming and open-ended activities.
"The best activities are those that don't have a right answer." Note: Algebra is not like this!
- produce real, but imaginative, products.
"My favorite-doing the unit on inventions. I invented my own oven by accident!"
- have options to prove their way works.
"I tend to think you are daring me to prove something when you suggest I can't."
- have hands-on experiences.
"I like to do things-stuff."
Take a few moments and reflect on what phrases you have heard (by friends, relatives, teachers, etc.), or what comments you have made yourself, that show how you are a Concrete Random type thinker/learner.
