Welcome to Fitness Walking online!

Welcome to Fitness Walking. This course is about making the choice to improve your cardiorespiratory fitness. There are many physical and psychological benefits to improving your cardiorespiratory fitness. This will be measured by a fitness assessment at the beginning and at the end of the semester. These assessments will be administered at the Clarkston campus. You will have to walk (or jog) a MINIMUM of 3-4 times a week during the length of the semester to show these physiological changes by the end of the term. You must check out (from the instructor) or purchase a heart rate monitor to use throughout the semester.

Course Logistics

Below you will find a list of logistics for taking this course:

Learner Responsibilities

Your responsibility in this course is to learn the material presented.  As your instructor it is my responsibility to present you with the material and provide you with the instruction and tools necessary for learning. I can provide you with the tools to learn but you must also do your part.

The following ideas are available to help you fulfill your responsibilities in this course.  They are ideas that will help you in any class you take even if it's not online.

In addition to learning the material presented you are also expected to maintain a friendly atmosphere in the online classroom.  "Flaming" and defamatory postings and email are not permitted in this environment.  Following simple "netiquette" guidelines will help you to avoid creating a negative learning environment.

  1. Don't type in ALL CAPS-- many people perceive this a yelling when online.
  2. Remember that the written word can seem harsher than a spoken statement because visual clues are absent.
  3. Try using emoticons such as :-) ;-) etc to let people know you are being light hearted.  It seems silly but it helps to lighten the mood.
  4. Always put something in the subject of email messages and discussion postings.
  5. READ the syllabus, discussion postings, and email messages before asking a question.  In many cases the question will have already been addressed.
  6. Have fun!

Help!  I can't get iCollege to work!

If you experience problems using iCollege don't panic!  Please use the support link below:

http://www.gpc.edu/icollege/help.html

GPC strives to solve all iCollege related problems within 48 hours.

While GPC will do their part to help you resolve problems and other situations regarding iCollege you do have some responsibilities.

 1.  You must seek help.  See the link above.

2.  Don't wait 2-3 days to report a problem.  Do it immediately!

3.  Notify me if your problems haven't been resolved in 48 hours.

4. Have an alternate computer access plan
If your ISP suddenly goes out of business, or your disk crashes, or your puppy chews up your modem, or you experience some other personal hardware issue, you are responsible for having an emergency alternative computer access plan. Know in advance where you can go (library, Internet cafe, friend's house, workplace) if your primary system fails!

5.  If you are experiencing technical issues with iCollege (not your computer /ISP) that are preventing you from turning in an assignment, responding to mail/discussions, or taking an assessment you have 2 responsibilities:

1)  Contact the helpdesk
2)  Notify me via mail, personal email, or phone
Both conditions must be met within 24 hours of experiencing the issue.  Failure to abide by these conditions means that you forfeit any possible time extensions, considerations, etc.

Attendance/Participation Policy

Students in an online course are expected to login a minimum of 3 times a week. Please remember that if you only do the minimum don't ask me why you didn't get an "A" at the end of the semester!

My recommendation for doing well in this course is to login daily to check for new discussions, emails, announcements, etc.

Students who fail to login for 7 days will be denied access to the course and must contact me through my GPC email to explain why they have not been in class and to regain access to the materials.

If you are having trouble please contact me and talk with me rather than just dropping off the face of the earth! I want you to pass this class-- actually I want you to do more than pass!

When responding to discussion questions your response must be well thought out and of academic interest. A response of simply "I agree" or the like will not be counted as a response.
