What Kind of Laptop for School?
What kind of laptop and hardware/software capabilities would be good for school use? Right now I’m “sharing” my son’s and it is bare-bones basic - it doesn’t even have Microsoft Word on it. If I get one of my own (IBM-compatible), what should I look for?

I would probably get the basics for just school work. It’s almost impossible to find a computer now without Vista installed on it. That would make the minimum ammount of RAM you need 1GB. There’s a pretty good deal I see in the ad for Fry’s Electronics:

-Dual core processor for those intense research papers you need to save, 80GB data storage, DVD burner, nice screen, and 1GB should be enough to run Vista decently.
Also another thing about MS Office. There’s actually a free utility that does about the same thing as MS Office. It can run powerpoints, word documents, spreadsheets and more, I use it on all my PCs. It’s called OpenOffice heres a link:

Hey. Thanks Barry. I, too, am looking to invest in a new laptop to replace the heavy, slow one I bought about 4 or 5 years ago. Would you recommend getting the store warrante or the manufacture’s?

Sorry for late reply, I would just get the store’s PSC (Performance Service Contract). It goes up to 5 years I believe. The manufacture’s warranty for computer parts is a good idea, but I learned the hard way not to stick with them for laptops and pre-built computers. It takes too long to get through to them, and their tech support stinks.
