Windows Vista

Postby Jordan » Tue Jan 13, 2009 8:41 pm

i have had the worst experiences with Vista. I have an alienware laptop(yes they're overpriced, dont buy one, ill build you one for cheaper) and I have a problem about once a month and have to call for tech support. Vista is always crashing or there is something always go wrong with it. I'm just now getting used to the new layout, but I still dont really like it. Any other opinions on it?

I despise Vista with a fiery passion. I would recommend putting XP on it if you have the drivers and are windows dependant. Windows 7 is definitely going in the right direction with it's improvements. If you're willing to experiment, try one of the linux distros. Personally, theyre not for me.

I have not considered linux, not that I wouldn't, I just havent.
What recommendations would you have for linux?

I don't like Microsoft Windows in general, so I have pretty much gotten rid of it (we have one laptop at home still running it because some stuff my husband has to use for work only runs on Windows, not even on WINE).

I'll add to the recommendation for going with Linux -- either John or I can easily get you a Live CD so you can "try before you install."

Actually, i disagree. I installed Windows 7 in a VMware window, and let me simply say this: It is Windows Vista with a new name, a new taskbar, and a somewhat W3C compliant Internet Explorer. With that being said, i went to install Firefox, and the thing bluescreen'd on me. Yes, i realize this is a beta, and that it is going to be buggy, but i have never had an OS crash when trying to install a simple browser. In any case, with the Alienware thing, i'd definately recommend Ubuntu Linux (i'm sure Ms. Benson or John will get you a copy of the CD). If you dont want to wait, just go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and when it gets done burning, use a Burning program (i like Alcohol 120%) to burn the ISO (.iso file) to a CD, and off you go! Just boot from the CD, and it should allow you to start Ubuntu Linux without installing it.

your best bet is to go buy an external USB connected cd drive and install it that way
