Worksheet For Sieve Analysis Data

Given in the table below are the values determined from the plot of the cumulative percent data on the probability graph. Use these values to calculate the Mean, Median, Sorting, Skewness, and Kurtosis from the Folk & Ward formulae listed in the lab exercise. Also complete what the numbers you calculate translate to in words.

Description of each of these sands:

Creek sand = quartz, rock fragment, micaceous sand from a creek near the Clarkston campus of Georgia Perimeter College.

Stream sand = quartz sand from the floodplain of the Ogeechee River near GA 88, Georgia.

Bahamas Beach sand = carbonate sand from the surf zone on Grand Bahama Island.

Bahamas Dune sand = carbonate sand from the back beach dune on the same beach as the Bahama Beach sand, Grand Bahama Island.

Florida Beach sand = quartz sand with shell fragments from the surf zone, Cape Canaveral Florida Beach.

Florida Dune sand = quartz sand from the back beach dune, Cape Canaveral Florida.

Tybee Island beach sand = quartz sand with some heavy minerals from the sand found above the high tide mark on Tybee Island, Georgia.

Below you will find the sieve data for three samples of unknown depositional environment. Complete the data table for each by calculating the Weight of sand, Cumulative weight, Weight percent and Cumulative percent. Plot the weight percent data on graph paper as a histogram and frequency curve. Plot the Cumulative percent data on probability graph paper for the cumulative probability curve.
