GMATYC Georgia Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges President's Corner

As mathematics instructors at the two-year college level, we are all passionate about teaching and mathematics. We know that by learning mathematics, our students are developing not only their mathematical skills but also their reasoning and cognitive abilities. All of these are needed at ever increasing levels in this computer and information age. We want to give our students the mathematical and reasoning abilities that will allow them succeed in the challenges of today. How can we best teach our students? How can we be great mathematics teachers? I believe that one way is to join and participate in opportunities and activities offered by the Georgia Association of Two-Year Colleges (GMATYC), the Georgia state affiliate of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC).

GMATYC can help you achieve your goals in several ways. First, GMATYC is a link to all of the wonderful programs offered by AMATYC. These programs include Crossroads, Beyond Crossroads, and Mathematics Across the Community College Curriculum. Second, we hold an annual meeting in February as part of the Georgia Perimeter College Mathematics Conference. The GPC Mathematics Conference offers us a wonderful opportunity to learn from other instructors in our area. Third, GMATYC sends a twice-yearly newsletter to its members in which issues, opportunities, and events of interest are discussed. For example, note the Gainesville Math Tournament and the Valdosta Math and Technology Conference. Fourth, every two years, GMATYC awards the Bill Bompart Teaching Excellence Award. This is a way we recognize great teachers. Finally, we are developing an online bulletin board on which members can discuss issues and offer creative solutions to the many challenges of teaching mathematics at the two-year college level.
